Medical Toxicology in Industry Webinar:
Connecting Exposure, Evidence, and Health: Epidemiology in Toxicology
Thursday, August 6, 2026
1:00-2:00 PM ET
Join ACMT on Thursday, August 6, at 1:00pm ET for a Bayer-sponsored Medical Toxicology in Industry webinar exploring the role of epidemiology in toxicology, public health, and regulatory science. Featuring Jennifer Reed, PhD, MPH, Senior Epidemiologist at Bayer Crop Science, and Rachel Culbreth, PhD, MPH, Research Director for ToxIC, this session will introduce key epidemiologic concepts, including observational and experimental study designs, exposure assessment, temporality, and the Bradford Hill considerations for causality. Discussion will include how epidemiologic evidence informs risk assessment and regulatory decision-making, while highlighting career opportunities for professionals with MPH training. Through perspectives from both industry and clinical toxicology research, participants will gain practical insight into how epidemiology supports evidence-based decisions that protect human health.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between major epidemiologic study designs, including observational and experimental approaches.
- Describe key concepts in epidemiologic research, including exposure assessment, temporality, and causal inference using the Bradford Hill considerations.
- Explain how epidemiologic evidence contributes to toxicology, risk assessment, and regulatory decision-making.
The webinar is free and open to all.
About the Medical Toxicology in Industry Virtual Fellows Program
Sponsored by Bayer and the MTF, this program provides medical toxicology fellows with a unique opportunity to explore the role of industry in toxicology. Participants gain insight into product development, from R&D and regulatory approval to market launch and post-market stewardship. The rotation helps bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering a deeper understanding of the regulatory landscape and career pathways in this sector.
This webinar is free and open to the public.
Sarah Eliza Lockwood, MD, FACMT (Moderator)
Medical Affairs Lead, Senior Science Fellow
Bayer U.S. Crop Science
S. Eliza Lockwood, MD, FACMT is an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist with a strong commitment to global health. After completing her Medical Toxicology fellowship at NYU in 2006, she returned to Washington University in St. Louis, where she established an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Medical Toxicology. Over the next decade, Dr. Lockwood became deeply engaged in global health and humanitarian efforts. She organized a relief mission to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, founded the Global Health Scholar Track within the Washington University Division of Emergency Medicine, and serves as one of the Global Health Scholars for the Department of Internal Medicine. Recognizing the need for sustainable solutions in global health, particularly around malnutrition and insect-borne diseases—two prevalent public health issues in developing countries—Dr. Lockwood began working as the Medical Affairs Lead for Bayer. In this role, she focuses on leveraging innovative agricultural and chemical technologies to address these critical challenges. Dr. Lockwood has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, on a wide array of topics in medical toxicology and global health.
Rachel Culbreth, PhD, MPH
ToxIC Research Director
American College of Medical Toxicology
Dr. Culbreth joined the Toxicology Investigators Consortium/ACMT in May 2022. She received her PhD and MPH in epidemiology and biostatistics from Georgia State University. Her dissertation focused on the development of novel statistical methods to measure current and amount of substance use in a hybrid structural equation mixture model framework. She was an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Georgia State University from 2019-2022, where she taught undergraduate and graduate-level research methods, healthcare leadership, and advanced statistical topics for pre-doctoral students. As ToxIC's Research Director, she leads new grant development and scientific dissemination through manuscripts and presentations, and enjoys working closely with clinical colleagues to advance medical toxicology research and practice.
Jennifer Reed, PhD, MPH
Senior Epidemiologist
Bayer Crop Science
Jennifer Reed, PhD, MPH, is a senior epidemiologist at Bayer Crop Science, where she has been instrumental in advancing agriculture through innovation. Her work spans various aspects of epidemiology, including the study of pesticides and their impact on neurodevelopmental outcomes. Reed's research and public health policies are informed by a comprehensive understanding of human data across laboratory and animal studies. She has a diverse professional background, having worked in the pharmaceutical industry and completed her education at the University of California, Davis and Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Reed's passion for agriculture and her commitment to public health continue to shape her contributions to Bayer Crop Science.
