2026 AACT Symposium | Pop Tox and Tik Toks
Presented by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT), this symposium explores the relationship between social media and toxicology. Toxicology is everywhere in pop culture today - From the shows we watch, to the books we read, to the social media we consume. It is very exciting to see things from our profession in the everyday world! However, it is common to see errors or misinformation in this material, and some of the content can lead to harm.
This on-demand course features recordings from the live event held on March 18, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts. The content has been edited into a digital package that includes ten asynchronous lectures from leading experts in the field. Designed for physicians and healthcare professionals in emergency medicine, medical toxicology, and forensic medicine, this activity provides essential tools to improve patient outcomes in complex poisoning cases.
Learning Objectives:
After attending the event, participants should be able to:
- Describe how toxicology is represented in popular and social media platforms.
- Examine potential misinformation and risks linked to media content.
- Identify communication strategies to counteract harmful media influences in clinical practice and patient education.

Joshua Bloom M.D., Ph.D. is a board certified emergency physician and medical toxicologist, a board-eligible addictionist, and the co-director of the Division of Medical Toxicology at New York City Health+Hospitals/Jacobi-North Central Bronx in New York, NY. He completed his medical toxicology fellowship at NYU-Grossman School of Medicine, where he led the New York City Poison Center's efforts to address rising morbidity and mortality from toxic nitrites. He is the chair of the advocacy subcommittee of the AACT Antidote Collective. He continues to actively study toxicology education and information dissemination, epidemiology of poisoning, and approaches to public health intervention to prevent suicide and morbidity due to poisoning.
Vincent Calleo, MD, MBA

Dr. Calleo is a native of Upstate New York. He attended SUNY Upstate Medical University for medical school and subsequently remained at Upstate for his residency in Emergency Medicine as well as his fellowships in both Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. He is currently the Medical Director for the Upstate NY Poison Center and Division Chief for Medical Toxicology at Upstate. Dr Calleo splits his clinical time between Toxicology and working in the ED. His research interests focus on the treatment and prevention of pediatric poisonings as well as medical education.

Cory Howard, MD

Cory Howard, MD, is an emergency medicine specialist based in Tampa, FL, with a subspecialty in medical toxicology. He completed his residency and fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Howard serves as an Assistant Professor at Tampa General Hospital and the Associate Medical Director at the Florida Poison Information Center-Tampa. He is also a Toxicology Teaching Faculty member at Brandon Regional Hospital and Assistant Clinical Instructor at Upstate University Hospital Physicians. His research includes publications on palytoxin-induced keratoconjunctivitis and drug toxicities, with works featured in Cureus and The Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Hoyte is the Medical Director of the Rocky Mountain Poison Center. He is also the Fellowship Director of the Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program at RMPDS. He is a Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Section of Medical Toxicology. Additionally, he sits on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and is a member of the Medical Toxicology Subboard of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He also is a member of the Editorial Board of Clinical Toxicology. Dr. Hoyte has published several book chapters in both emergency medicine and medical toxicology textbooks, as well as multiple peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the Medical Toxicology Clinic at the University of Colorado Hospital. Dr. Hoyte attended Princeton University receiving his undergraduate degree in molecular biology and then attended NYU School of Medicine where he received his doctorate of medicine and received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. He completed his medical toxicology fellowship at RMPDS in Denver, Colorado. Dr Hoyte is a fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the American College of Medical Toxicology.

Monica Thacker, M.D., M.S. is an Emergency Medicine physician affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. She completed medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine (class of 2021) and subsequently entered an Emergency Medicine residency at Jefferson Health Northeast. Dr. Thacker works in the emergency department, providing acute care to patients and managing a wide range of urgent medical needs, leveraging her training in emergency medicine.
Michael S. Toce, MD, MS, FACMT

Dr. Michael Toce completed his undergraduate studies at Carleton College where he received a B.A. in biology and biochemistry. He received a M.S. in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his pediatrics residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program before completing a Medical Toxicology Fellowship and Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital. He is currently an attending in the Boston Children's Hospital Emergency Department and works as a Medical Toxicologist at the MA/RI Poison Control Center. Dr. Michael Toce conducts research that focuses on pediatric toxicology and emergency medicine, with an emphasis on adolescent and young adult opioid exposures. He has published on the association of state opioid reduction policies (PDMPs, pain clinic legislation, naloxone access laws) with pediatric opioid poisonings and is currently focused on assessing the evolving relationship between youth mental health conditions and substance misuse.

Josh Trebach is an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. He completed his undergraduate training at Virginia Tech, medical school training and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and toxicology fellowship at New York University/New York City Poison Control Center. Josh is currently the Associate Medical Director of the Iowa Poison Control Center and is passionate about all things toxicology, medical education, social media, and public health.
